The Metallophone is an interactive acoustic instrument that is comprised of a steel shroud and 24 unique electro-mechanically actuated gong assemblies (two octaves). I championed the design of the Metallophone and assisted in the fabrication of it.
Each of the 24 gong assemblies has a rotational solenoid that strikes the gong to sound it and an LED light ring that activates upon strike. Three interactive interfaces below the instrument allow the participant to manipulate factors such as complexity (arpeggiation) and frequency of strikes within the bounds of a pre-programmed musical composition. The synchronized lighting interactivity between the interfaces and instrument help guests to know exactly what they’re controlling.
The musical composition of the Metallophone is synchronous and complementary to the that of the Piano Harp, another actuated acoustic instrument in the space that I designed.
