The Piano Harp is an interactive acoustic instrument that is comprised of the soundboard of a studio piano, a structural armature to support the piano on the wall, an LED-integrated steel shroud surrounding the piano, and 50 rotary solenoid / striker assemblies. I championed the technical design of the structural armature and both the technical and creative design of the aesthetic shroud that defines the form of the instrument.
Three interactive interfaces below the instrument allow participants to change the complexity and strike frequency of the pre-programmed musical composition. As with a traditional piano, strikers hit the strings to sound notes; on the piano harp, rotary solenoids are responsible for this actuation. The synchronized lighting interactivity between the interfaces and instrument help guests realize what they’re controlling.
The musical composition of the Piano Harp is synchronous and complementary to the that of the Metallophone, another actuated acoustic instrument in the space that I designed.
